Bantams and Standards

All chickens are classified by either being standard or bantam and then by their breeds.

Standard, or large chickens, are generally thought of as the "normal" kind of chicken. Standards are bigger and lay larger eggs than bantams do. Because they are bigger and lay larger eggs, these would be the chickens to raise for meat or eggs.

Bantams are smaller chickens. They are about ¼ the size of standard chickens.Bantams are smaller and they lay smaller eggs than standards do. Bantam eggs are about half the size of standard eggs. Because bantams are not as common as standards, they would be great as show birds, although standards are also good for showing.

The standard bird is on the left, and the bantam is on the right.
